Follow-up: ThermoBot2 (2016-2018)

ThermoBot2 – Robotic inspection system for crack detection in forging parts
ThermoBot2 is a national funded follow-up to the successfull seventh framework programm project ThermoBot. The gained expertise of ThermoBot is used to develop an industrially applicable robotic inspection system and active thermography to detect cracks in forged parts.

Goals of the project

  • A model-based path planning algorithm which is capable to generate an optimized path for a given part. This algorithm uses a specifically designed process model for checking that the whole physically verifiable surface.
  • The accuracy of the detection must be as good as the accuracy of magnaflux testing. Thus means that the rate of detection errors (detected cracks where no crack is in reality) must stay very low.
  • In ThermoBot2 the duration for the inspection should be decreased a part can be checked in a time range of 30 seconds to 1 minute (depending on the size of the part).


Applications include especially forging parts in the automotive and aircraft industry.


The consortium consists of technology providers in robotics, industrial inspection and thermographic cameras and end-users that cover forging parts in the automotive and aircraft industry.

The project is funded by the FFG.
